Submarine monument

The Submarine Monument (Monumen Kapal Salam, or sometimes shorted to Monkasel), is located on the banks of the Kali Mas river, downtown Surabaya next to the Plaza Surabaya at Jalan Pemuda No. 39.

This monument is a real Whiskey Class submarine used by the Navy of the Republic of Indonesia with callsign Pasopati KRI 410 and was made by the Soviet Union in 1952. This ship took part in the sea battle with the Ducht about West Papua.

Submarine Monument was inaugurated on June 27, 1998 and is to commemorate the bravery of the heroes of Indonesia. The location of the monument is quite far from the sea so to get the submarine to the Surabaya city center was not easy. To do this, the submarine was cut into 16 sections and then brought to the Submarine Monument area where it was re-assembled.

In the submarine are several rooms, among others:

  • Front torpedo room with four torpedo launchers
  • Periscope room and also the combat information room
  • Living room for officers
  • Sailors room
  • Back torpedo room
  • Electric equipment room
  • Diesel room

Each room is separated by watertight doors. The indoor temperate could get quite hot. When in operation the submarine crew had to withstand these hot temperatures inside the vessel. Although sufficient oxygen was being supplied, the ship was not equipped with air conditioning. It is now though.

The Submarine Monument is very suitable for families as it will be very educational for the adults as children. It is one of the few locations in the world where you can actually go into a retired submarine and get a feel how life is on board a submarine.
