Air Berlin Insolvency Adds To Etihad's Turbulent Summer

Etihad’s strategy of taking stakes in struggling airlines has been dealt another blow, with Air Berlin filing for insolvency just months after a similar move by another of its equity partners, Italy’s Alitalia.


The failure of two high-profile investments in such a short space of time comes as Etihad is already in the middle of a strategic rethink and will surely add to the likelihood of a concerted change in approach.


Air Berlin announced on August 15 that it had filed for insolvency at the local district court of Berlin-Charlottenburg after Etihad Airways withdrew its financial support for what is Germany’s second largest carrier.
