Tigerair customers may use personal electronic devices including mobile phones, e-books and tablets for the duration of their flight provided these devices are in flight mode.

The green light for the extended use of personal electronic devices was provided by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) following recent new guidance on the safe use of personal electronic devices inflight.

Tigerair's Commercial Director Adam Rowe welcomed this decision and said that it was a positive development for Tigerair customers who would benefit from uninterrupted, gate-to-gate electronic access to work and entertainment.

"œMost people these days keep their personal devices within arm's reach for multiple reasons, so being able to continually access them during the flight will help further make travel with Tigerair a seamless and enjoyable experience," said Mr. Rowe.

In addition to CASA's approval, Tigerair has also conducted its own tests to ensure that the extended use of personal electronic devices will not interfere with the the safe operation of its aircraft in anyway.

"œSafety is Tigerair's number one priority and in line with industry guidelines, we are now providing the ability for passengers to use their devices on board, provided they are in flight mode, from the moment they board to the moment they disembark - including when the aircraft is taxiing on the runway, during take-off and landing."

The extended use of personal electronic devices inflight follows a number of recent consumer facing innovations that make flying Tigerair better than ever, including kiosk check in technology across two key ports (Brisbane and Melbourne), online web check in for all domestic flights, automated bag drop technology and new on board menus with select pre order and hot menu items for the first time.

Tigerair advice on in-flight use of personal electronic devices for passengers:

· Personal electronic devices including mobile phones in flight mode which weigh less than 1 kg and can be held in one hand with their largest dimension no greater than 25 cm may be used during all phases of flight, including take-off, landing and taxiing.

· Personal electronic devices cannot be used when transiting across tarmac.

· Once aircraft doors are closed for departure, devices are required to be in flight mode.

· Passengers are expected to pause and listen to inflight safety briefings and further instruction from the crew.

· Personal electronic devices without flight mode capability activated may not be used in-flight.

· Calls and texts cannot be made on mobile phones during the flight and their cellular transmission must be turned off.

· Personal electronic devices which weigh more than 1 kg and cannot be held in one hand with their largest dimension greater than 25 cm (such as laptops or personal computers) must be stowed in an overhead bin or under the seat in front of you during taxi, take-off and landing but may be used in flight mode once the fasten seat belt sign has been turned off after take-off and until the fasten seat belt sign is illuminated for landing.
