PERAK folk can fly to various destinations with more flights expected to take off from the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh.

Just weeks after Firefly commenced its Ipoh-Johor Baru flights, in addition to the Ipoh-Singapore route, Malindo Air has also started operating flights between Ipoh and the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport in Subang.

Malindo Air chief executive officer Chandran Rama Muthy said the budget airline would be offering flights on the Johor Baru-Ipoh and Ipoh-Medan routes starting Oct 17.

"œWe are also keen on operating the Ipoh-Singapore route next year if the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport is able to accommodate Boeing jets," he told reporters after arriving on the airline's inaugural Subang-Ipoh flight last Friday.

He added that Malindo Air, also planned on flying the Ipoh-Langkawi and Ipoh-Krabi routes soon.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who was at hand to welcome Chandran and other passengers who arrived on the flight from Subang, said it was a historical moment for Perak.

"œFor so many years, there had only been one flight from this airport.

"œWith the help of Malindo Air, we hope to have a more vibrant tourism industry," Dr Zambry said.

He added that the state government had worked extremely hard and meticulously to woo airlines to operate flights out of Ipoh.

"œApart from the airport in Ipoh, the state government is also looking at extending the airstrip in Grik with a RM15mil allocation from the Federal Government.

"œEither that, or we will build a completely new airport in Hulu Perak to promote the Belum-Temenggor rainforest and Lenggong Valley archaeological site," he said.

Malindo Air operates the Ipoh-Subang route three times a week on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
